On the Road with ECO Youth

By Julian Rodríguez-Drix, Programs Coordinator, Environmental Justice League of RI

ECO Youth, (Environmental Community Organizers) is a grassroots youth-led organization that stands for justice for our communities.  We fight against all types of inequality: from racism to classism, from the toxins and pollution in our environment to the health problems in our communities.  We promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles that everyone can access and benefit from.

With the help of a grant from the Community Catalyst Fund of Clean Air – Cool Planet we have been able to launch an exciting project with the Green D(RI)VE bus.  We are converting our full-length diesel bus to run on vegetable oil, creating a documentary about the project, and using the bus as a mobile learning lab.

ECO Youth members are creating multi-media workshops about the inter-related issues of climate change, diesel air pollution, and asthma.  The Green D(RI)VE bus is also a mobile learning lab, transporting students to conferences and community events where they can deliver hands-on demonstration projects on alternative energy.

ECO Youth and Green D(RI)VE are ongoing projects that we have recently launched.  The vegetable oil conversion will take place in April and then we will be taking our workshops on the road!  Keep an eye out for us, and let us know if you’d like us to come present in your community, to your organization, or at a conference you are involved in planning!

ECO Youth is a program of the Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island and we can be contacted at ECO.Youth.RI@gmail.com or info@ejlri.org
